Outdoor Blinds and Outdoor Screens in Auckland

Outdoor blinds turn a deck you use on still days into one you use for more of the year, out of the wind, the rain and the glare. We're a certified Ziptrak installer, one of our two owners measures every outdoor blind we fit, and all 21 of our outdoor screen reviews on Google are five stars.

Is it genuine Ziptrak?

If you've got a quote or two in front of you and they all say "zip", it's fair to go through them line by line and ask: is this genuine Ziptrak, and is this genuine Rollease Acmeda ZipScreen?

With us, the answer to both is yes, and you can check it three ways.

✓ We're listed on Ziptrak Australia's own website as a certified New Zealand installer

✓ The product named on your quote is Ziptrak, spelt Z-I-P-T-R-A-K, not a similar-sounding name

✓ Down each side of the blind runs a spline, held inside a channel and very hard to pull out of the guide

The name has a story. "Zip" first meant a fine zip sewn along the side of the fabric and caught in a channel, which is closer to how ZipScreen works today. Ziptrak moved to a bigger spline, and its grip in the channel is why it's proven the sturdiest of our outdoor blinds in high winds.

Where the difference shows is the first hard northerly. Some cheaper zip screens sold under similar names have blown out in storms, and by then the money's spent and the deck furniture is out in the rain.

Genuine Ziptrak sits at the top of the market, and we'd rather tell you now than have it surprise you later. If another quote is cheaper, this is what's different.

✓ A genuine Australian system, made and assembled here in New Zealand

✓ One of the owners on the measure, our own team on the fit, with Roman leading every job

✓ A spline system proven in high winds

✓ A blind built for 10 years and more

And if a simpler screen suits a side of your deck, we'll say so at the measure.

Ziptrak, ZipScreen or café style: which outdoor blind is right for you?

Every deck, patio, pergola and balcony is different, so we carry five kinds of outdoor blinds and match one to your space at the measure. Sometimes it's two kinds on the same deck, with the weather side getting the stronger system.

Genuine Ziptrak

The top of our range, and Roman's first choice to install. It stops at any height and holds its shape when the wind picks up. The rest is up to you.

✓ Spring operation, wound down by hand, or a motor if you'd rather press a button

✓ PVC or mesh

✓ Flashing or a full pelmet headbox to finish the top, including the Ziptrak Streamline pelmet

More on our Ziptrak outdoor blinds page, or read about designing your own Ziptrak outdoor screen and the new Ziptrak Streamline pelmet.

Genuine Rollease Acmeda ZipScreen

Rollease Acmeda's top-range Australian outdoor blind, held at the sides in a channel much like the original zip idea. If a quote names ZipScreen, ask whether it's the Rollease Acmeda product. Ours is, and the options are on our ZipScreen outdoor blinds page.

Hand-rolled zip screens

These outdoor roller blinds zip down the sides and anchor to posts or walls, so they close a sloping or odd-shaped area without gaps. Add a zip partway along and you've got a doorway to the barbecue without rolling up the whole screen. They come in PVC or mesh.

Café and bistro blinds

Café blinds roll up and down, with or without side guides, by crank or motor, in PVC or mesh. Despite the name, bistro blinds suit a home deck just as well, and they mix happily with Ziptrak on the sides that take more weather. More on our café style outdoor blinds page.

Fixed panels

For a side that never needs to open, a fixed panel closes the gap and stays put.

A different product, not lower quality

Plenty of decks don't need Ziptrak on every side, and our other options use the same PVC and stainless fittings as our top range, from the same manufacturer.

On the measure we show you both side by side: where Ziptrak is worth it, such as an exposed corner, and where a simpler screen will do the job for years. Then you make the call knowing exactly what you're getting.

PVC or mesh, and how outdoor blinds handle Auckland wind

For outdoor blinds in NZ the choice comes down to PVC or mesh, and that depends on what you want from the space.

✓ Clear PVC keeps your view and keeps the rain off the table

✓ Tinted PVC takes the edge off the afternoon glare

✓ Mesh filters the sun and gives you privacy from the neighbours, while the air still moves through

Auckland wind is the real test for outside blinds, and it's where the spline earns its keep. When a screen lets go mid-storm, the cushions are soaked and dinner's moved inside. That's the evening gone.

Victoria chose mesh, and it kept her deck dry through the cyclone. Her review is below.

Outdoor blinds give you shelter from wind, rain and sun. They don't replace a roof or an awning, and no blind is storm-proof. For cover overhead, our awnings pair well with side screens.

Got a corner that takes the full force of the wind? Call 09 441 9455 and we'll show you the spline and channel on a sample, on your own deck. Nothing to commit to.

Measured by the owners, installed by our own team

An owner measures your deck and quotes it, and our own team fits it. We've been at it since 2010, first as North Shore Blinds and Screens, and David and Roman have been here since 2012.

No two sites are the same, outdoor screens especially, which is why we don't give prices from sizes. We'd rather take the time and get it right. The free measure covers:

✓ Your posts, walls, slopes and gutters, and where the wind comes round the house

✓ How you want to use the space

✓ Samples and mesh swatches on your deck, in your own light

✓ A straight answer on which product each side needs

✓ A clear quote you can check against any other, line by line

Our showroom is by appointment only, so we bring the showroom to you. What looks right in a showroom often doesn't at home.

Will we come to you? Our focus for outdoor blinds in Auckland is the North Shore and West Auckland, and we also cover East Auckland and north up to Mangawhai. The free measure and quote is for the Auckland area.

Once you're happy, Roman leads the install with our own team. As Iain put it: "The installation and end result was even better than hoped for with Roman and David carrying out the work themselves ensuring the best possible outcome." (Iain, February 2022)

How long do outdoor screens take?

Most people have a date in mind. Family coming for Christmas, a deck-warming, a builder finishing up.

Here's how timing usually runs.

✓ Main season, spring and summer: 4 to 5 weeks from deposit to install

✓ Off season: a little less

✓ Before Christmas: longer, like everything else

✓ Your timeframe confirmed with the quote

So tell us your date at the measure. The earlier we measure, the more room you have before Christmas.

What our customers say about their outdoor screens

We have 260+ five-star Google reviews, 21 of them for outdoor screens, and most of our customers are repeat or referred. Here are three.

Sameer, on the measure and the install:

"Rollerflex recently installed two cafe blinds and one Ziptrak blind at my home. David promptly responded to my inquiry, providing a swift measurement and quote. The installation team, David and Roman, were professional and resourceful in addressing a specific challenge posed by my existing outdoor structure." Sameer, November 2024

Victoria, on wind and rain:

"Both Roman and David listen to what we wanted and advised the best option for our deck. Mesh outdoor screens kept our deck dry and cosy even during the recent heavy rains and the cyclone." Victoria, March 2023

Tony, a repeat customer:

"We had two installers install 2 outdoor Ziptrack blinds and 4 indoor Roller blinds ... Now a few months later we have had these two gentlemen back to install 2 more Ziptrack Blinds. Again a fine quality job done. We are really pleased with the product and the installation." Tony, March 2025

Tony came back for two more. A free measure and quote is where it starts.

Outdoor blind questions

Is it genuine Ziptrak?

Yes, and our ZipScreen is genuine Rollease Acmeda too. We're listed on Ziptrak Australia's website as a certified New Zealand installer, and the quote names Ziptrak, spelt Z-I-P-T-R-A-K. We'll show you the spline on the measure.

Can you give me a price from my sizes?

Not one you could rely on, and a guess is no use for comparing quotes. David or Roman measures in person, free across Auckland, and you get a quote you can check line by line.

Do you have a showroom?

Yes, by appointment. What looks right in a showroom often doesn't at home, so we'd rather bring the samples to your deck.

How long do outdoor blinds take?

Allow 4 to 5 weeks from deposit to install in the main season, and a little less in the off season. It stretches before Christmas, so tell us your date at the measure.

What warranty do you give?

Two years full, parts and labour, with no call-out fee. If something goes wrong in that time, ring us and we come and fix it.

Can outdoor blinds be motorised?

Yes. Ziptrak comes with spring or motor operation, and café style blinds with crank or motor. If you'd rather press a button than wind, we'll show you the motor options at the measure.

Do you install them yourselves?

Yes. Our own team installs, with Roman leading every job, and the owner who measured your deck stands behind the install.

How do I look after PVC outdoor blinds?

Follow our PVC outdoor screen care guide. We also offer follow-up maintenance and servicing, so the screens you buy now are still looked after years from now.
